VIENNA – Austrian Finance Minister Markus Marterbauer received overwhelming support from the Social Democratic Party (SPÖ) at its party convention on Saturday, March 7, 2026, securing 99.66 percent of delegate votes for a position on the party’s executive board. The strong showing contrasts with the results for SPÖ Chairman Andreas Babler, who received a comparatively lower 81.51 percent of the vote, signaling potential internal divisions within the party.
Marterbauer’s landslide victory marks the highest percentage of support received by any of the party’s leading figures, according to reports from the convention. This outcome underscores his growing influence within the SPÖ structures, particularly as it was his first time running for a position within a party committee.
Government Coordinator Michaela Schmidt also proved popular with the base, achieving the same 99.66 percent result as Marterbauer in the executive board vote and securing the second-highest score in the party’s presidium. SPÖ Women’s Chair Eva Maria Holzleitner also performed well, receiving 98.99 percent in the presidium and 97.82 percent in the executive board.
While Babler’s 92.44 percent in the executive board vote represented an improvement over the 81 percent he received in the chairmanship election, the disparity in support highlights a potential disconnect between the party leadership and its delegates. The results come as the SPÖ navigates internal discussions on key policy issues, including immigration and the situation in Palestine.
Party Treasurer Christoph Matznetter received comparatively weaker results, with approximately 89 percent in the presidium and just under 93 percent in the executive board. This lower support may be linked to concerns over potential funding cuts due to changes in parliamentary representation, according to some reports.
The overall results of the executive board elections were positive, with every candidate receiving at least 90 percent of the vote. The strong showing for Marterbauer and Schmidt suggests a potential shift in the party’s internal dynamics, as they garnered significantly more support than Babler. The convention results could influence the direction of the SPÖ as it prepares for future political challenges.
