A ten-month-old baby in Kerala, India, has grow the state’s youngest organ donor after being declared brain dead following a vehicle accident, offering a life-saving opportunity for five recipients. The unprecedented donation is being hailed as a landmark moment for organ donation awareness in the region.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan announced that official honors will be bestowed upon Alin Sherin, recognizing the extraordinary gift of life she provided. “Alin Sherin’s parents have created a huge model for Kerala society in the field of organ donation,” Vijayan said in a statement.

The Chief Minister too commended the healthcare workers, police, and ambulance drivers who worked tirelessly to facilitate the organ donation process. He shared his remarks via a Facebook post, acknowledging the immeasurable grief of the parents whereas praising their selfless decision.

According to the Chief Minister’s Facebook post, Alin Sherin Abraham was involved in a traffic accident that resulted in her being declared brain dead. Despite their devastating loss, her parents, Arun Abraham and Sherin Ann John, agreed to donate her liver, two kidneys, heart valve, and two corneas, making her the youngest organ donor in the state and giving a second chance at life to five individuals.

Initially, plans were made to transport the organs from Kochi to Thiruvananthapuram via helicopter, but due to restrictions on civil aviation helicopter use at night, the organs were transported by road. Authorities praised the swift and efficient response of the police and the cooperation of the public in ensuring the safe and timely delivery. Post-mortem procedures were conducted at Kottayam Medical College overnight to facilitate the organ retrieval, given the urgency of the situation.

As of today, organs received from Alin have been successfully transplanted into two children, and their health is reportedly improving. The successful operation is a testament to the coordinated efforts of medical professionals and the dedication of all involved. The Chief Minister highlighted the remarkable cooperation between the public and private sectors in making this donation possible.

“Their decision is great, even in the unbearable grief of losing their beloved child,” Vijayan stated. “Alin will be honored with official honors by our state.”
