Brussels police are investigating the theft of the head of a baby Jesus figurine from the city’s Grand Place Christmas display, confirmed Wednesday RTBF. The incident, which is not the first of its kind affecting the display, comes amidst ongoing public debate surrounding this year’s unconventional, faceless nativity scene-a design choice that has drawn criticism from some residents La Libre Belgique. Authorities are currently working to replace the stolen piece and have released no information regarding possible suspects.

A piece of a Brussels Christmas display has been stolen, officials confirmed Wednesday. The head of the baby Jesus figurine, made of fabric, was taken from the nativity scene in the city’s Grand Place, according to a spokesperson for the Brussels mayor.

“I confirm. It was the stuffed head serving as the head of the little Jesus that was stolen. We are in the process of replacing it,” said Victor Kanyanzira, the spokesperson. This isn’t the first instance of items being stolen from the Grand Place’s Christmas display.

This year, Brussels opted for a faceless, fabric nativity scene, a decision that has sparked debate. The choice of a non-traditional display drew criticism, as reported by La Libre Belgique. The theft underscores the challenges of maintaining public displays, even those intended to be unconventional.

Details about the theft are still emerging, as reported by RTBF. Authorities have not released information regarding potential suspects or surveillance footage.
