Barış Göktürk, a former board member of Fenerbahçe Football AŞ, has announced his intention to run for president of the Turkish club in the 2027 elections. The announcement came during a speech at an event hosted by the Balıkesir Fenerbahçe Supporters Association.

Göktürk emphasized the need for Fenerbahçe to move beyond a system reliant on individuals, arguing that annual elections are detrimental to the club’s long-term interests. “Management should be allowed to complete their terms,” he stated. “Our preparation is for the 2027 general assembly, which will coincide with Fenerbahçe’s 120th anniversary. My colleagues and I are working towards a lasting system that will illuminate Fenerbahçe’s future.”

With the club approaching its 120th year, Göktürk believes Fenerbahçe requires a fundamental reform, shifting its focus from fleeting successes to a sustainable, institutional framework.

“I’M TIRED OF WATCHING THE SAME MOVIE”

Göktürk pinpointed a person-dependent management style as the core issue plaguing the club. He argued that Fenerbahçe needs to prioritize consistent achievement over temporary triumphs fueled by financial resources.

“We should focus on lasting successes, not just temporary championships that come with money and abundance,” Göktürk explained. “Fenerbahçe needs an institutional system independent of individuals. Tyson Gay broke a world record, but no one remembers him because he finished second to Usain Bolt. Milorad Cavic was just a tenth of a second behind Michael Phelps, but nobody remembers his name. History is unforgiving; it doesn’t remember those who come in second. Astronomical transfer fees, exorbitant salaries, and still failing to become champions… I’m tired of watching the same movie.”

Göktürk clarified that he and his team will not be candidates in the upcoming elections unless unforeseen circumstances arise. This strategic pause allows them to concentrate on developing their long-term vision for the club’s structural overhaul, aiming to build a foundation for sustained success beyond individual seasons.
