The vaccine, endorsed by the Colombian Ministry of Health and incorporated into the country’s Expanded Immunization Program, is considered both safe and effective. A single dose administered to pregnant people will allow them to pass protective antibodies to their babies, potentially reducing hospitalization rates for children under five years old. This approach aims to provide early protection during a vulnerable period.
Stephanie Araujo Blanco, Barranquilla’s Secretary of Health, announced the vaccine rollout will coincide with the closing of the third national intensification campaign this weekend. This broader effort also focuses on increasing vaccination rates for influenza, pertussis (whooping cough), yellow fever, and human papillomavirus (HPV). The RSV vaccine will be available at all Paso, Camino locations and participating healthcare facilities free of charge.

“We are calling on all pregnant individuals to visit the nearest vaccination site to receive this free and safe vaccine,” Araujo Blanco stated. “We have the support of all EPS and IPS to also deliver the vaccine outside of traditional healthcare settings in areas with high vulnerability, and in this way avoid complications from respiratory infections in children under five years of age.” The initiative underscores the importance of proactive measures to safeguard infant health and reduce the burden on healthcare systems.
