Charlotte Breaks Ground on 140-Unit Affordable Housing Project

Charlotte city leaders and developers officially began construction today on a 140-unit affordable housing complex along South Boulevard near Tyvola Road, a project aimed at addressing the city’s growing housing crisis.

The development is one of the first major initiatives funded by Charlotte’s $100 million housing bond, approved by voters last November. City Council member Tiawana Brown, representing District 3, emphasized the project’s importance for working families. “I know what it means when working families can’t find a place to afford to live in their neighborhood, a neighborhood that they love and call home,” Brown said. “Working people who make Charlotte run and a better place must drive an hour because they are priced out of wherever they live.”

Located near two grocery stores and two Lynx Blue Line stations, the complex will offer residents convenient access to employment, essential services, and public transportation. The lack of affordable housing options has been linked to increased commute times and financial strain on lower-income residents. Blue Ridge Atlantic, the project’s developer, overcame challenges including pandemic-era construction costs and rising interest rates to move forward. “We had struggles at the beginning of COVID,” said Sam Weldon, vice president of development for Blue Ridge Atlantic. “Budget overruns, rising interest rate costs, rising construction costs.”

While officials celebrated the groundbreaking, they acknowledged the significant need that remains. Ralphine Caldwell with the Charlotte Housing Investment Fund noted that approximately 30,000 affordable housing units are still needed in Charlotte, and this project will serve essential workers like teachers, police officers, and firefighters.
