The leader of Benfica’s prominent supporters’ group, the Diabos Vermelhos (Red Devils), was found dead near Estádio da Luz in Lisbon on Friday night. The investigation into Sérgio Caetano’s death has been handed over to the Polícia Judiciária, Portugal’s judicial police, with reports indicating a firearm was involved.

Benfica officials confirmed Caetano’s passing, issuing a statement on the club’s official website lamenting the loss of an “indispensable figure in the Benfica universe.”

“His unwavering dedication to the Club leaves an indelible mark on the history of supporting Benfica, in the most diverse stadiums and pavilions, in Portugal and abroad,” the statement read. “Sport Lisboa e Benfica extends its deepest condolences to the family of Sérgio Caetano, his friends, and the Diabos Vermelhos at this time of profound sorrow.”

Despite the outpouring of grief, the Diabos Vermelhos do not have official backing from Benfica and are not registered with the National Sports Council, though they continue to operate as an organized supporters’ group. This news comes during a crucial stretch of the season for Benfica, as they battle for a top spot in the Primeira Liga standings.
