Bibbiano, Italy – Funeral services for Jap Kaur, a 13-month-old infant who died on January 1, will be held this Friday, January 16. The child succumbed to a severe and aggressive form of pneumococcal meningitis at Maggiore Hospital in Parma, Italy, leaving the community deeply saddened.
The tragic illness began on December 18 with a visit to Santa Maria hospital, where Jap Kaur initially showed some improvement. However, her condition rapidly deteriorated on December 21, leading to a desperate ambulance ride to Santa Maria Nuova in Reggio. She was then urgently transferred to Maggiore Hospital in Parma, where she remained hospitalized for nine days while battling the life-threatening infection. Pneumococcal meningitis, a bacterial infection of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, can progress quickly and cause severe complications, especially in young children.
Jap Kaur’s parents, Singh Palwinder, 45, and Kaur Baljinder, 35, are devastated by the loss. Singh Palwinder works as an agricultural laborer in Corniano, while Kaur Baljinder is a homemaker. The couple, who have limited Italian language skills, also have a five-year-old daughter enrolled in a local preschool in Bibbiano.
Neighbors in Corniano describe the family as kind and respectful. Kaur Baljinder arrived in Italy in 2023 through a family reunification permit. The mayor of Bibbiano, Stefano Marazzi, expressed his condolences, stating, “Tragedies of this kind leave one literally stunned and speechless. In this moment of such great and sudden suffering, I want to express to this family, on behalf of the entire Bibbiano community, our closeness and most sincere condolences.”
Complicating the family’s grief, there are bureaucratic hurdles preventing the repatriation of Jap Kaur’s ashes to India. Singh Palwinder explained, “The little Kaur’s ashes, to be transported to India, require a special authorization, and my wife has not yet had her permit renewed by the Reggio police station. We are still waiting – he said, unable to hold back tears – without my wife’s permit and that of our five-year-old daughter (who attends the municipal kindergarten in Bibbiano), we cannot transport the ashes of little Kaur to India. We hope for a little help, that the situation can be resolved.”
A brief prayer will be held in front of the hospital chapel on Friday before the procession moves directly to the Parma crematorium, pending the necessary authorization for cremation and the eventual transfer of the ashes to India. The case highlights the challenges faced by immigrant families navigating healthcare systems and legal processes during times of immense personal loss.
