Public health officials in Bihor County, Romania, are reporting a marked increase in respiratory illnesses, placing a strain on local healthcare resources. Recent data shows a notable rise in cases of acute upper respiratory infections, pneumonia, and influenza, with hospitalizations also trending upward[[1]]. This surge comes as the region records its first influenza-related death of the season, highlighting the vulnerability of those with underlying health conditions.

Respiratory illnesses, including the flu and pneumonia, are on the rise in Bihor County, Romania, according to recent data from public health officials.

The Bihor County Public Health Directorate reported a significant increase in acute upper respiratory infections last week, with 5,174 cases diagnosed – a jump from 3,711 the previous week. This surge led to 44 hospitalizations, compared to 24 the week prior.

Between January 12 and January 19, 1,233 cases of pneumonia were identified in the region, resulting in 96 hospitalizations. While this represents an increase from the 1,067 pneumonia cases and 107 hospitalizations reported the week before, the rate of hospitalizations for pneumonia has slightly decreased.

Influenza cases also saw fluctuations, with 136 diagnoses reported during the third week of the year, down from 308 the week before. Of those cases, 29 patients required hospitalization, a decrease from 70 the previous week. Laboratory tests confirmed the presence of the AH3N2 strain in 17 influenza cases and the AH1N1pdm 2009 strain in two cases.

Tragically, Bihor County has recorded one influenza-related death this season – a 77-year-old man with underlying health conditions, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pulmonary fibrosis, and congestive heart failure grade III. This underscores the heightened risk influenza poses to individuals with pre-existing medical vulnerabilities.

Vaccination rates against the flu remain largely unchanged, with only 181 additional residents receiving the vaccine in the latest week, bringing the total to 23,978. This slow pace of vaccination highlights an ongoing public health challenge in achieving widespread immunity. The first influenza-related death was reported in the county this season.
