Bill Belichick will have to wait for his enshrinement. The legendary coach was not selected for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame during his first year of eligibility, despite a remarkable six Super Bowl titles earned as head coach of the New England Patriots, ESPN reported Tuesday.

According to four anonymous sources, Belichick did not receive the necessary 40 votes from the 50-member selection panel comprised of media representatives and Hall of Fame members. ESPN reported that Belichick received notification of the decision from the Hall of Fame last Friday.

The Hall of Fame has declined to comment on the report, stating they will wait to make an announcement during the NFL Honors ceremony on February 5th in San Francisco.

The news of Belichick’s non-selection quickly drew reaction, including a post from Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who wrote on social media: “That’s crazy… I don’t even understand how that happened.”

Belichick took the reins of the Patriots in 2000 and guided the franchise to six Super Bowl victories and three additional appearances in the championship game between 2001 and 2018. His combined regular season and playoff win total of 333 with New England and Cleveland ranks second all-time behind Don Shula’s 347. He was named NFL Coach of the Year by the AP three times.

Before his storied tenure in New England, Belichick established himself as one of the NFL’s premier defensive minds, winning two Super Bowls as defensive coordinator for the New York Giants.

Belichick’s career wasn’t without controversy, however. He was involved in the “Spygate” scandal during the 2007 season and fined $500,000 after the team was caught filming the New York Jets’ defensive signals during a game.

Belichick’s time in New England concluded after the 2023 season, and he recently completed his first year as a coach at the University of North Carolina.

Belichick was one of five finalists in the group consisting of coaches, contributors, and senior players whose careers ended in 2000 or earlier. Patriots owner Robert Kraft was the finalist in the contributor category, while Roger Craig, Ken Anderson, and L.C. Greenwood were the finalists among the players.

Between one and three of these finalists will be inducted, along with three to five players from the modern era selected from a group of 15 finalists. The upcoming Hall of Fame class will be a significant moment for the league, recognizing the contributions of some of football’s most impactful figures.
