Bishop Aichern: Funeral and Memorial Services Announced

The former Bishop of Linz, Maximilian Aichern, passed away Saturday at the age of 93 after a long and impactful career in the Catholic Church. Funeral services for the esteemed religious leader will be held across two Austrian cities this week, beginning with a viewing Thursday evening at Linz Cathedral. The public is invited to pay their respects during the scheduled viewings and services, culminating in burial monday, February 9th, at St. Lambrecht Abbey in Styria.

The former Bishop of Linz, Maximilian Aichern, who passed away Saturday at the age of 93, will be laid to rest Monday, February 9, at St. Lambrecht Abbey in Styria. Funeral services will precede the burial in both Linz and St. Lambrecht. A viewing will be held Thursday evening from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM in the tower chapel of Linz Cathedral, where the bishop’s remains are currently located.

Members of the cathedral chapter will recite Lauds at 7:45 AM Friday near the casket, after which the public will have an opportunity to pay their respects throughout the day. A vigil will follow the evening service, beginning at 7:00 PM, with the casket placed before the altar. It will remain there Saturday from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM for further viewing. A solemn requiem mass, led by Bishop Scheuer, will begin at 12:00 PM and will be broadcast live on ORF III and ORF ON.

Following the funeral services in Linz, the casket will be transferred to the former bishop’s home monastery, St. Lambrecht, and placed in the abbey church on Sunday beginning at 11:30 AM. A requiem mass will be celebrated Monday at 2:00 PM in the abbey church, presided over by Abbot President Johannes Perkmann. Bishop Wilhelm Krautwaschl of Graz will officiate the final commendation. The burial will then take place in the abbey crypt, led by Abbot Alfred Eichmann. Aichern served as abbot of St. Lambrecht prior to his appointment as Bishop of Linz.
