The automotive market is experiencing a shift, as once-unattainable luxury brands become increasingly accessible on the used car market. A new report examines this trend, focusing on the BMW 5 Series (G30) and finding that, in some cases, it is now priced competitively with mainstream models like the Škoda Superb. This analysis delves into the value proposition of the G30, assessing its features, potential costs, and overall appeal to buyers seeking a premium experience without the premium price tag.
For years, the price gap between used premium vehicles and mainstream brands like Volkswagen and Škoda has been shrinking. In many cases, a used BMW can now be purchased for less than a comparable Škoda model, particularly when considering common configurations like diesel four-cylinder engines.
Typically, a used premium vehicle will have higher mileage, but some buyers prioritize the prestige of the brand over odometer readings. As vehicle depreciation continues to reshape the automotive market, the accessibility of luxury brands is increasing.
Similar to how prices for the BMW 3 Series (F30) fell, the BMW 5 Series (G30) can now be found at prices comparable to a Škoda Superb 2.0 TDI. This report takes a closer look at the G30 5 Series to assess its value proposition.
BMW at Škoda Prices
For testing, a 2018 BMW 520d Touring with a 2.0-liter diesel engine producing 140 kW, all-wheel drive (xDrive), and an automatic transmission was evaluated. The vehicle had accumulated 228,000 km and was listed for 375,000 Kč.

The Touring variant (code G31) is popular for its practicality. Used car prices depend on the version, mileage, and origin. The cheapest models are available for under 300,000 Kč, while others are listed for over two million Kč.
The most common engine option is diesel, and manual transmissions are rare in the current listings. Most used models feature rear-wheel drive, though all-wheel drive options are also available. Gasoline-powered rear-wheel drive models are scarce. Around 500,000 Kč can buy an attractive gasoline version with a more powerful six-cylinder engine, while a diesel six-cylinder starts at 460,000 Kč.
According to Filip Kučera of Auto ESA, “The BMW 5 Series (G30), particularly in the practical Touring version, is a mainstay and one of the most sought-after vehicles in the premium used car segment. The configuration with a diesel engine, automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive is the most popular. This particular vehicle from 2018 exemplifies how the premium segment is approaching mainstream pricing. With around 228,000 km, its cash price is comparable to similarly aged or newer Škoda Superb 2.0 TDI models, often with less attractive features.”
Kučera continued, “The typical customer is an experienced driver transitioning from the mainstream class. They no longer want ‘just’ a Superb, but desire prestige, superior ride comfort, and the technology offered by BMW. They particularly appreciate the excellent soundproofing and the efficiency of the diesel engine on long journeys. Direct competitors in the premium segment include the Audi A6 Avant and Mercedes E T-Model, but the main battle for customers is with the Škoda Superb. However, it’s important to note that while the purchase price is comparable, the operating costs of a premium vehicle remain higher. Service and spare parts for BMW will always be more expensive than for mainstream competitors. The 2.0D engine is considered reliable, but it is complex technology, and maintenance comes at a cost. For vehicles with higher mileage, their origin and technical condition are crucial. At Auto ESA, we emphasize thorough pre-sale inspection. Customers are assured of a verified odometer reading, guaranteed legal origin, and advantageous financing options, making the premium vehicle accessible to a wider range of potential buyers.”
A Premium Vehicle for a Fifth of the New Price
The base price of a new 5 Series in 2018 was around 1.4 million Kč, but with options, it likely cost around 1.8 million Kč. Now, this vehicle can be purchased for a fraction of the original price, roughly a fifth of the original cost.

Compared to its predecessor, the perceived quality is significantly improved, even in vehicles with higher mileage. Even base models of the 5 Series typically come with a rich set of features.
The driving experience remains impressive. While not a sports car, the G30 5 Series handles well for a large vehicle. The primary drawback is the harshness of the run-flat tires, which feel wooden even at relatively high profiles and minimal pressure. Replacing them with conventional tires is highly recommended to improve ride quality.

The cargo area is spacious and more practical than, for example, the X5. However, if you frequently transport pets or dirty items, it’s advisable to purchase protective upholstery and plastic liners. Many models also include a tow hitch.
The G30 5 Series represents a significant improvement over the previous F10 generation, offering a more refined driving experience and a higher perceived quality.

Important functions are still controlled by dedicated buttons. The infotainment system can be naturally operated using the iDrive controller next to the gear selector. Those familiar with BMW will feel right at home, as the basic concept hasn’t changed much since the E90 generation.
The 2.0-liter diesel engine delivers smooth power, and while it doesn’t offer the same performance as a six-cylinder, it’s sufficient for most drivers. Fuel economy is good, with combined figures of 6.5 to 7 l/100 km achievable in real-world driving.
Mechanics are Sound, But Require Attention
The B47 diesel engine is more reliable than its predecessor, the N47, which was plagued by timing chain issues. According to Petr Dorotovič of DPdiagnostic, a BMW specialist, “The timing chains typically last over 200,000 km. There’s no need to replace them preventively; simply measure their condition with an oscilloscope.” He notes that a common issue is the EGR valve, which can become clogged with soot.
