Free Book Boxes Pop Up Across Kochi Ahead of Hortus Festival

Kochi, India – Free “Hortus Reading Boxes” have been established at multiple locations throughout Kochi, offering residents and visitors the opportunity to share books and foster a love of reading in anticipation of the Manorama Hortus Arts and Cultural Festival.

The initiative, part of the larger festival taking place at Subhash Park from November 27-30, encourages participants to take a book, read it, and either return it or replace it with a book from their personal collection. Readers are asked to leave a brief review or note inside the book upon return and to ensure books remain in good condition. This type of community-based book sharing is gaining popularity as a way to increase literacy and access to reading materials.

Reading Boxes have been installed at locations including Athulya and Jyothirgamaya in Kakkanad Infopark, Story Box Café in Kakkanad, Forum Mall in Maradu, the Subhash Park library, Loafers Café in Fort Kochi, Hearth Café in Tripunithura and Kakkanad, Hearth Kitchen in Panampilly Nagar, and Idam Art Café in Panampilly Nagar. The festival itself aims to celebrate arts and culture, and this book-sharing program extends that ethos to the literary world. Organizers encourage everyone to participate and bring friends and children to explore the boxes, contributing to a growing chain of reading and knowledge. The Manorama Hortus Festival is expected to draw large crowds, and this initiative provides a unique and accessible cultural experience for all. Officials stated that the Reading Boxes are intended to nurture a love of language and reading within the community.
