Brandenburg‘s already fragile governing coalition fractured this week, leading to the dismissal of State Secretary Patrick Wahl by Health Minister Britta Müller [[1]]. The move follows the formal dissolution of the alliance between the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and the upstart Alliance Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW),throwing the eastern German state into a period of political uncertainty [[2]]. While officials maintain Wahl’s removal is procedural-designed to allow Müller to govern without internal conflict-the decision underscores the challenges facing chancellor Olaf Scholz’s national coalition as right-wing pressures mount across Germany.

Brandenburg’s Minister of Health and Social Affairs, Britta Müller, has dismissed Patrick Wahl, her state secretary, following the collapse of the coalition between the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and the Alliance Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW). The move, announced on February 21, 2025, aims to ensure the continued functionality of the state government as it seeks to form a new coalition.

The political shift in Brandenburg, a German state bordering Poland, comes as coalition talks are underway following the recent dissolution of the previous governing arrangement. The dismissal is intended to allow Müller to lead her ministry without conflicts of interest, according to a statement released by her office.

“Only under these conditions is a trustworthy and responsible leadership of the ministry possible without a conflict of conscience,” Müller stated. “Consequently, this results in a separation from the state secretary of the BSW.”

Müller explicitly thanked Wahl for his “very good and dedicated work” as state secretary, clarifying that the dismissal was not related to his professional performance. “The dismissal is in no way related to the professional or substantive performance of Patrick Wahl,” she said.

Wahl, a founding member of the BSW – Alliance Sahra Wagenknecht – Justice and Reason, had been serving as the party’s parliamentary group leader since February 2024. He was appointed state secretary by Brandenburg’s Minister-President Dietmar Woidke on February 21, 2025.

The development highlights the fluid political landscape in Germany and the challenges of maintaining governmental stability during coalition transitions. The outcome of the ongoing coalition negotiations will likely shape the future direction of Brandenburg’s policies.
