Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are set to reprise their iconic roles in a new installment of The Mummy franchise, slated for release in May 2028. The long-awaited sequel was officially confirmed by Universal Pictures on Tuesday, bringing fans a return to the beloved adventure series that captivated audiences at the turn of the millennium.
The project will be helmed by Radio Silence Productions – the company led by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett – who previously demonstrated their ability to revitalize classic franchises with their work on the recent Scream films. The duo will also direct the upcoming movie.
The original 1999 film, The Mummy, arrived on the heels of the success of films like Indiana Jones and Tomb Raider, quickly becoming a hit in its own right. Brendan Fraser’s charismatic portrayal of Rick O’Connell, alongside Rachel Weisz’s resourceful Evelyn, and John Hannah’s comedic supporting role, formed the heart of the trilogy. The films blended thrilling action, lighthearted humor, and a classic adventure spirit.
Whereas the third film in the series proved divisive among fans, the franchise remains a defining piece of early 2000s blockbuster cinema. Universal previously attempted a reboot in 2017 starring Tom Cruise, but the film failed to resonate with audiences, leading the studio to return to the original formula and stars.
The studio is now going back to its roots with the original stars.
According to IGN, franchise veteran Sean Daniel will also produce the fourth installment, further reinforcing the “back to basics” approach. The screenplay is penned by David Coggeshall, who could bring a modern sensibility to the story while preserving the classic adventure elements.Fraser has experienced a remarkable career resurgence in recent years, while Weisz remains one of the most respected actresses on the international stage. Their reunion alone promises a strong dose of nostalgia for fans.
