Brignone Leads, Goggia in Third After Giant Slalom First Run at Milano Cortina

Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy – Federica Brignone set the pace in the first run of the women’s giant slalom at the Milano Cortina Olympic Winter Games on Tuesday, February 12, 2026, while Sofia Goggia sits in third position. The Italian duo are looking to add to their medal count as the alpine skiing events continue.

Brignone clocked a time of 1:23.41, establishing a strong lead over the field. The performance comes after a remarkable comeback for Brignone, who is competing less than 10 months after a serious injury that threatened her career.

France’s Miradoli is currently second, 41/100ths of a second behind Brignone, and Austria’s Cornelia Huetter is close behind in third. Goggia trails by 76/100ths of a second, placing her fifth, while Elena Curtoni is seventh, just one hundredth of a second further back.

The competition has already seen its share of drama, with several favorites failing to finish the first run. Goggia, who recently won gold in the Super-G, struggled during her run and did not complete the course.

Brignone’s strong showing comes after winning gold in the Super-G on February 12, 2026, marking a historic moment in her career. This result adds to her impressive list of accomplishments, including previous Olympic medals in giant slalom and combined events, as well as multiple World Championship titles and World Cup victories.

The second run is expected to be decisive as athletes battle for the Olympic podium. The event is drawing significant attention, with fans flocking to Cortina to support the Italian team, particularly Brignone and Goggia.
