Pop superstar Britney Spears, 44, was arrested Wednesday night, March 4, after being taken into custody for allegedly driving under the influence in California.
The arrest comes as Spears continues to navigate life after the termination of her 13-year conservatorship, a case that drew international attention to the complexities of legal guardianship and artist control. Jason Alexander, Spears’s former husband – their marriage lasting just 55 hours in 2004 – commented on the situation via social media.
“If reports are correct that she blew a .06 on the breathalyzer, that’s below the legal limit in most states. And if the only substances in her system were legally prescribed medications, that completely changes the narrative,” Alexander wrote online.
“At most, what’s being discussed now could potentially result in minor misdemeanors, things like reckless driving or simple possession if any substance was found in the car,” he added.
“Rumors spread faster than facts, and suddenly someone is being judged before the truth is even clear. Britney Spears deserves the same thing anyone else does: facts, justice, and due process, not headlines based on speculation,” Alexander concluded.
Spears was arrested late Wednesday night, according to information from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office in California. The pop star was pulled over by the California Highway Patrol around 9:30 p.m., booked shortly after 3 a.m. On Thursday, March 5, and subsequently released.
Records indicate her vehicle was impounded.
Representatives for Spears have been contacted for comment, as has the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office.
This is not the first time Spears has faced legal issues.
She was previously charged with misdemeanor hit-and-run in 2007, a charge that was later dropped after she paid for the damages.
Spears is scheduled to appear in court on May 4.
