Brussels Airport & MIVB: Strikes Cause Travel Disruption – March 12

Brussels Airport is bracing for a complete shutdown of departing flights on March 12 as Belgian trade unions prepare for a nationwide strike. The action, protesting government policies on issues including pensions and long-term illness benefits, is expected to significantly disrupt air travel.

According to reports, all departing passenger flights from Brussels Airport will be cancelled on March 12. Incoming flights are as well anticipated to experience disruptions. This mirrors similar widespread cancellations seen at both Brussels Airport and Brussels South Charleroi Airport during industrial action in 2025.

The strike notice, issued by key unions including FGTB/ABVV, CSC/ACV, and CGSLB/ACLVB, calls for a 24-hour walkout affecting multiple sectors, including transport and airport operations. Security screeners, baggage handlers, and air traffic controllers are expected to participate.

Arnaud Feist, CEO of Brussels Airport, stated that a complete shutdown of outbound services is the “most realistic scenario,” with between 165 and 250 flights typically departing from the airport each day. The disruption comes after Lufthansa was forced to cancel nearly all flights due to a strike last week, causing significant disruptions across German airports.

Several airlines are already responding to the anticipated disruption. Air Canada is offering passengers flexible rebooking options for flights scheduled on March 12, waiving extra costs for changes made a few days before or after the strike date. Passengers are advised to check their flight status with their airline and consider rebooking if possible.

The strike action is directed at the Belgian government, led by Prime Minister Bart de Wever, and its coalition, which unions describe as nationalist and right-leaning. The unions are protesting policies related to long-term sickness, pension arrangements, and maternity benefits.

Public transport in Brussels is also expected to be heavily impacted by the strike, with the MIVB public transport company warning of “strong disruption” on March 12.
