Seoul, South Korea – South Korean lawmaker Kang Sun-woo was taken into custody on Monday, March 3, 2026, amid allegations of receiving illicit political funding. The arrest, along with that of Kim Kyung, a former Seoul City Council member, marks a significant development in a widening corruption probe, and raises questions about potential influence peddling within the political system.
Kang, an independent member of the National Assembly representing the Gangseo district of Seoul, is accused of accepting 100 million won (approximately $73,000 USD) from Kim in January 2022. According to investigators, the funds were allegedly offered in exchange for favorable consideration during the selection of candidates for local elections. Yonhap News reported that Kang expressed remorse, stating, “I apologize to the people for causing concern with this matter.”
Police are also investigating claims that Kang was allegedly involved in pushing for preferential treatment for the daughter of a major donor. Hankyoreh reported on these additional allegations, which surfaced recently.
Kim Kyung was arrested on similar charges, and authorities are considering bringing in Kim Byung-ki, a former lawmaker, for further questioning. According to a report from Yonhap News TV, investigators have secured evidence related to 13 separate allegations involving Kim Byung-ki.
Kang Sun-woo’s political career includes serving as a member of the National Assembly since 2020, having defeated incumbent Geum Tae-sub in the 2020 general election. Her biography on Wikipedia details her educational background, which includes degrees from Ewha Womans University and the University of Wisconsin–Madison. She previously worked as an instructor and assistant professor at universities in the United States.
The case underscores growing scrutiny of political financing practices in South Korea. Political commentator Ju Jin-woo called for accountability from both the ruling party and the Democratic Party, stating, according to v.daum.net, “Lee Dae-jung and the Democratic Party should bow their heads before the people.”
Kang and Kim are currently being held at the Mapo Police Station, with a decision on whether to formally indict them expected soon. The investigation is ongoing.
