Global K-pop sensation BTS is preparing for its first performance in four years, a free concert scheduled for March 21st in Seoul. The event, announced Wednesday by Yonhap news Agency, will see the seven-member group blending their signature sound with traditional korean music as part of a broader party of Korean culture ahead of their new album release, ‘Arirang.’ Anticipation is high, with officials preparing for a crowd potentially exceeding 200,000 as fans eagerly await the return of the group following individual pursuits, including mandatory military service [[1]].
BTS is set to return to the stage with a free concert for approximately 15,000 fans, with thousands more expected to gather in the surrounding area, Yonhap News Agency reported Wednesday. The highly anticipated performance marks the K-pop group’s first in four years.
The group will blend their signature songs with traditional Korean music at Seoul’s most iconic location, a move that underscores the group’s continued exploration of their cultural roots. This concert arrives ahead of the release of their new album, ‘Arirang,’ on March 20th, named after Korea’s most beloved folk song.
According to government and music industry sources cited by Yonhap, the concert will feature a ceremonial procession of the seven BTS members walking from within Gyeongbokgung Palace, the largest of Seoul’s five grand palaces, evoking a royal entrance.
“It seems the whole nation is waiting for this,” Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon said Wednesday in a statement from his office following a meeting to discuss preparations for the event. He emphasized the symbolic importance of the March 21st concert, calling the Gwanghwamun Square, where it will be held, “the heart of the South Korean capital.”
The performance will involve around 50 dancers and 13 musicians from a traditional troupe, reflecting the concept of their upcoming album, ‘Arirang’ – a song that represents Korean identity, longing, and national unity.
In addition to the 15,000 attendees at the concert itself, Seoul Plaza, located near City Hall, will be equipped with giant screens to broadcast the show live to an additional 13,000 people. Observers estimate that as many as 200,000 people may converge on the area, including those seeking to experience the atmosphere surrounding the event, the South Korean news agency reported.
Reservations for the free tickets will be available on online ticketing websites following an announcement “soon” on Weverse, the fan community platform operated by BTS’s agency, Hybe, according to Yonhap.
The concert will be directed by Hamish Hamilton, known for his work on high-profile events such as the Academy Awards, MTV Video Music Awards, the 2012 Olympic Games, and collaborations with numerous renowned artists. It will also be livestreamed globally on Netflix at 8:00 PM local time (08:00 AM Chile time). This global broadcast will undoubtedly amplify the event’s reach and impact on the K-pop phenomenon.
