BULELENG, – Fifteen people were bitten by a stray dog in the vicinity of Jalan Gunung Batur and the Buleleng Market in Singaraja on Sunday, March 8, 2026. The dog reportedly attacked multiple individuals before being subdued and euthanized by local residents. The incident prompted a swift response from the Buleleng County General Hospital, where all victims received immediate medical attention.
According to reports, the brown-colored stray dog initially attacked a resident near the Buleleng Market around 6:00 a.m. Local time. It then continued southward, biting several more people before being captured and killed. The sudden outbreak of dog bites raises concerns about potential rabies exposure, a serious public health issue.
Dr. Ketut Suteja Wibawa, Director of the Buleleng County General Hospital, confirmed the influx of patients with dog bite injuries. “We received 15 patients with dog bites from the Jalan Gunung Batur area up to the Buleleng Market,” he stated. “One patient required hospitalization due to a fractured hand sustained during the attack.”
Patients began arriving at the hospital’s emergency room around 6:30 a.m. Local time. Medical staff immediately initiated first aid, including thorough wound cleaning, and began administering rabies vaccinations as a preventative measure. The hospital is coordinating with the local Health Department to provide ongoing care and monitoring for those discharged.
“The origin of the dog is currently unknown, as patients reported being bitten unexpectedly,” Dr. Suteja explained. “However, we understand the animal has been euthanized, and its brain will be tested in a laboratory to rule out rabies.”
