The video game industry is in mourning following the Sunday death of Vince Zampella, a pivotal figure behind the record-shattering Call of Duty franchise, in a car accident near los Angeles. Zampella’s career spanned decades of innovation, from early work on the Medal of Honor series with Steven Spielberg to founding both infinity Ward and, later, Respawn Entertainment. His passing arrives as the gaming sector prepares for Gamescom, a key industry event, and continues navigating a period of significant evolution and consolidation.
The video game industry is mourning the loss of Vince Zampella, a co-creator of the blockbuster Call of Duty franchise, who died Sunday in a car accident near Los Angeles, California. The news comes as the gaming world prepares for major events like Gamescom, signaling a period of both innovation and challenges for the sector.
The California Highway Patrol confirmed a two-fatality traffic collision occurred Sunday on Angeles Crest Highway, but declined to release the names of the victims, according to NBC Los Angeles.
Electronic Arts (EA), the parent company of Respawn Entertainment – the studio led by Zampella – described his death as an “imaginable loss” in a statement. Zampella first gained prominence as a lead developer on 2002’s Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, working alongside director Steven Spielberg, who spearheaded the Medal of Honor franchise.
Founding Infinity Ward
Following a disagreement with Electronic Arts, Zampella co-founded Infinity Ward in 2002 with fellow game designers Jason West and Grant Collier, all of whom had contributed to Allied Assault. Their debut title, Call of Duty, revolutionized the first-person shooter genre. The game and its subsequent installments have collectively sold over 500 million copies, establishing a dominant force in interactive entertainment.
Activision later acquired Infinity Ward, but in 2010, the company terminated Zampella and West, leading to a legal battle over wrongful termination. The dispute was settled amicably in 2012.
Respawn Entertainment and Battlefield
Zampella and West subsequently established Respawn Entertainment, which went on to create successful titles including the Titanfall and Apex Legends series. Electronic Arts acquired Respawn in 2017.
In 2021, EA appointed Zampella to oversee the Battlefield franchise, developed by DICE, as it faced increasing competition. He led the development of Battlefield 6, released in October 2025, which received positive reviews. The appointment signaled EA’s commitment to revitalizing a key franchise in a competitive market.
“Vince’s impact on the video game industry has been profound and far-reaching,” EA stated. “His work helped shape modern gaming,” the company added, noting that he “inspired millions of players and developers around the world.”
