Vince Zampella, the co-creator of the massively popular Call of Duty video game franchise, has died in a car accident in California at the age of 55.
The news was confirmed by Electronic Arts, the parent company of Respawn Entertainment, the video game studio he co-founded. Zampella’s passing marks a significant loss for the gaming industry, which has seen rapid growth and innovation in recent years.
The influential game developer was traveling in a Ferrari with another passenger when the vehicle crashed and caught fire on a highway outside of Los Angeles on Sunday.
“This is an unimaginable loss, and our hearts go out to Vince’s family, loved ones, and all those touched by his work,” an Electronic Arts spokesperson told BBC News.
Authorities reported that the passenger was ejected from the vehicle, while the driver was trapped inside.
It is currently unknown who was driving the car and the identity of the other victim.
Both individuals were pronounced dead at the scene.
“For reasons still under investigation, the vehicle left the roadway, collided with a concrete barrier, and became fully engulfed in flames,” the California Highway Patrol stated in a release to BBC News.
The accident occurred on a winding road overlooking Los Angeles and the San Gabriel Valley. NBC News reported that a witness provided authorities with video footage of the crash, showing a red 2026 Ferrari 296 GTS colliding with the barrier shortly after exiting a tunnel.
His Legacy
Zampella first created Call of Duty in 2003 alongside longtime collaborators Jason West and Grant Collier.
Inspired in part by events from World War II, the game has sold over 500 million copies, making Activision, now owned by Microsoft, one of the most profitable video game companies in the world.
The franchise has also inspired an upcoming action film currently in production.
Call of Duty wasn’t Vince Zampella’s only success; he also spearheaded other popular titles including Medal of Honor, Titanfall, and Apex Legends.

Geoff Keighley, a journalist and host of The Game Awards who authored a book about the creation of Titanfall, described Zampella in a post on X as a “dear friend” and a “visionary executive” who “never wavered in his commitment to honesty and transparency.”
“While he created some of the most influential games of our time, I always felt like his greatest work was still ahead of him,” he stated. “It’s heartbreaking that we’ll never get to play it.”
“He really cared about the player experience,” Keza MacDonald, a video games editor at The Guardian, told BBC Newshour.
She added, “He cared about making games, he cared about how people felt when they played them, and that always came through when you spoke to him.”
YouTuber MrRoflWaffles, whose Call of Duty videos have earned him over 2.4 million subscribers, acknowledged the developer for inspiring “an entire generation” with the franchise, including his own content.
“If we’re talking about the most important figures in the video game industry, he’s definitely one of them,” he told BBC Newsbeat.
In 2010, Zampella and West were fired from Activision, the publishing company for the Call of Duty games, and subsequently became embroiled in a lengthy legal dispute with the company that was settled out of court in 2012.
At Electronic Arts, Vince Zampella worked on Battlefield 6, considered a direct competitor to Call of Duty.
Infinity Ward, the American company that developed Call of Duty, stated that Zampella “will always have a special place in our history.”
“Your legacy of creating iconic and enduring entertainment is immeasurable,” the company said in a statement on X.
