Cambodia’s Ministry of Health has reported the country’s first confirmed human case of avian influenza A(H5N1) this year. The case involves a 30-year-old man from Kampot province in the southwest of the country, local media reports.

Symptoms of H5N1 Avian Influenza

Health officials stated the patient experienced fever, cough, abdominal pain, and a runny nose – common symptoms of avian influenza in humans. Fortunately, with intensive medical care, the man recovered and returned home on February 14.

Source of Infection and Spread of H5N1 Avian Influenza

Investigations revealed that the patient had consumed poultry that died three days before the onset of symptoms. Authorities are now tracing contacts and potential exposures to limit the virus’s spread within the community. While H5N1 typically spreads between infected poultry, human infection can occur through direct contact with infected birds or their droppings. Human infections are rare but can be severe, highlighting the importance of vigilance.

Treatment and Prevention of H5N1 Avian Influenza

The antiviral drug Tamiflu (oseltamivir) has been distributed to individuals who had close contact with the patient. This medication, also used to treat seasonal influenza and certain human cases of H5N1, aims to reduce the risk of complications.

Recommended preventative measures include:
  • Washing hands thoroughly after handling birds.
  • Avoiding direct contact with sick or dead poultry.
  • Cooking poultry thoroughly before consumption.
  • Wearing masks when handling birds during an outbreak.
