Canon is making a significant push into the hybrid camera and cinema markets with a suite of new releases aimed at professional videographers and content creators. The company today unveiled two flagship models – the Canon EOS R6 Mark III and the Canon EOS C50 – designed to elevate workflows and blur the lines between still photography and professional video capture.
The launch of the EOS R6 Mark III and EOS C50 reflects a growing trend in the industry where the distinction between high-end stills and video cameras is diminishing. Canon is positioning these cameras as all-in-one solutions, catering to both nimble creators needing versatility and photographers demanding top-tier image quality. A key feature driving this convergence is the introduction of “Open Gate” functionality, offering unprecedented flexibility for creating both vertical and horizontal content.

Table of Contents
The EOS R6 Mark III, the third generation of the ‘6’ series, builds on the success of the EOS R6 Mark II. Canon is positioning this model as a stills-focused camera that doesn’t compromise on video capabilities, incorporating advanced video features inspired by the Cinema EOS C50. This allows it to compete directly with higher-end cinema models.
The R6 Mark III delivers a surprise with support for high-resolution 7K 60p RAW video recording, and crucially, 7K/30p in a 3:2 aspect ratio via Open Gate. This is a first for the EOS R line, providing freedom to rescale images for cinematic looks and vertical video formats. It also supports Canon Log 2 and Log 3, 4K/30p video recording (with oversampling from 7K), and 4K/120p slow motion. For still photography, the camera boasts a pre-continuous shooting mode at up to 40 FPS, making it a versatile option for hybrid shooters, event photographers, weddings, and concerts.
Canon EOS C50: Dedicated to Video
The EOS C50 is Canon’s smallest Cinema EOS camera to date, but it packs a powerful punch. Designed as a full-frame hybrid, it combines the quality of the Cinema EOS line with a compact and versatile form factor. It’s not just a video camera, however, offering high-resolution still image capture at 32 megapixels. At its core is the DIGIC DV 7 Processor, enabling RAW video recording up to 7K 60P, as well as slow-motion capture at 4K 120P and 2K 180P.
A standout feature for today’s creators is the Open Gate Recording function, a first for the Cinema EOS series. This utilizes the full sensor area in a 3:2 aspect ratio, resulting in a large, flexible file that can be cropped for both vertical (Reels/TikTok) and horizontal (YouTube) content without sacrificing quality. It also supports Anamorphic lenses for a cinematic look with realistic depth. The camera’s lightweight and modular design makes it suitable for handheld shooting or use with a gimbal, and it offers comprehensive connectivity, including XLR ports, Timecode, HDMI Type-A, CFexpress and SD card slots, and high-quality livestreaming via USB-C.
New Lenses Expand the Ecosystem
Canon is also expanding its lens lineup with two new models. The RF45mm f/1.2 STM is likely to be a popular choice, offering the widest aperture in the RF series at an accessible price point. Its 45mm focal length is ideal for portraiture with beautiful background blur, and it provides a 72mm equivalent angle of view when used with APS-C cameras like the EOS R50. The second lens, the CN5 x 11 IAS T, is a high-end Cinema Lens in the Cine-Servo series, offering a wide zoom range of 11-55mm and supporting 8K HDR recording, making it ideal for live broadcasting and high-quality film production.
