Carola won the Swedish edition of the Eurovision Song Contest, Melodifestivalen, in 2006 with the song “Evighet.” However, before the final in Gothenburg she experienced an unsettling incident at a spa, which the Swedish singer recently shared on Instagram.

In a post to her roughly 300,000 followers, Carola wrote that she was excited for Melodifestivalen and the semi‑final in Gothenburg on February 7. She added that the memory of the uncomfortable episode from 2006 resurfaced.

Swedish newspaper Expressen reported the story earlier this week.

Spa shock

In the candid Instagram post, Carola recounts the incident that occurred when she was scheduled for an interview ahead of the 2006 Swedish final. The interview was to take place in the hotel’s spa area where she was staying, and she arrived early to secure a pleasant setting for the photos.

She believed she was alone in the room, but while standing in front of the sauna mirror adjusting her hair, she suddenly noticed movement inside the sauna. She opened the door, looked in, and saw a man sitting and staring at her.

Took it in stride

“Hello,” she wrote, the greeting she usually uses with strangers. The man said nothing, spread his legs and pulled the towel that had covered him away. Carola says she lowered her gaze and closed the door just as the journalist and photographer she had arranged arrived.

Carola says she didn’t tell the journalist what had happened, but pretended nothing was amiss and proceeded with the interview.

“The images stayed in my head, but I’ve learned with iron will and the right mindset to push difficult challenges aside, leave them behind and move forward,” Carola wrote. Out of the corner of her eye she saw the unknown man leave the sauna and head toward the changing room.

“Invincible” in Athens

Despite the unsettling episode, Carola secured victory in the Swedish final in 2006, earning a spot at the Eurovision Song Contest final in Athens, where she placed fifth with “Evighet,” released internationally as “Invincible.”

Carola is not competing in this year’s Melodifestivalen. She recently underwent vocal‑cord surgery and, in the post, expressed a longing to sing again; for now her vocal cords are resting and she is cheering on her talented colleagues.

The Instagram post has, at the time of writing, nearly 4,000 likes and more than 250 comments. Fans have shown their support for the artist and praised her decision to share the story.
