Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse was one of the biggest surprises announced during last night’s State of Play presentation and according to Konami, this represents “just the beginning” of what’s planned for the return of the series.
As part of a broader push to rediscover and relaunch its historic franchises – a trend also seen with Silent Hill, as demonstrated by the presentation of Silent Hill: Townfall – Konami intends to bring Castlevania back into the spotlight, starting with this intriguing project. The revival of these iconic franchises underscores the growing trend of established game developers revisiting their classic titles to capitalize on nostalgia and evolving player preferences.
Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse is being developed by Evil Empire and Motion Twin, the team behind Dead Cells and The Rogue Prince of Persia, a team with a proven track record in the so-called metroidvania genre and an excellent choice to lead a new Castlevania title.
An Anticipated Return
However, Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse won’t be a one-time concession to fans, but rather the start of Castlevania’s return to the video game scene, with further projects yet to be revealed.
“This year marks the 40th anniversary of the original Akumajō Dracula’s first release,” reads a message on the official Castlevania website, “In this commemorative year, Castlevania will build a comeback.”
The post also states that “This is just the beginning of numerous new products related to Castlevania,” suggesting further announcements are coming soon regarding other games in the series. This signals a renewed commitment from Konami to the Castlevania universe, potentially opening doors for a wider range of experiences for fans.
The Castlevania team also praised the developers behind the new title, stating: “We couldn’t think of any other studios to collaborate with other than Evil Empire and Motion Twin, studios rich in talent and passion, to create a new 2D action exploration game that captures the essence of Castlevania even as also bringing original innovations.”
Their previous experience with the Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania DLC undoubtedly played a role in this decision, demonstrating their ability to handle the source material.
