A 78-year-vintage man with far-right political affiliations was taken into custody Tuesday after an hours-long standoff with police in Châteauroux, France. The incident prompted a large-scale deployment of law enforcement and bomb disposal experts to the Beaulieu neighborhood.
18:35 (6:35 PM) The local prosecutor has opened a press conference at the Châteauroux courthouse, promising further details on the ongoing investigation.

18:30 (6:30 PM) In a press release, Mylène Wunsch, the regional leader of the National Rally (RN) party, condemned “all forms of violence against law enforcement” and denounced what she described as an attempt to link the suspect to her.

The local prefect stated, “The area is now secure, despite two explosive devices [grenades] that the bomb disposal unit will neutralize,” with a return to normalcy expected by evening.

According to early reports, the suspect was injured during the standoff and has been taken into medical care. The extent of his injuries remains unknown.
