China’s Chen Yufei captured the Indonesia Masters women’s singles title on Sunday, defeating Thailand’s 19-year-old sensation Pitchamon Opatniputh 23-21, 21-13. The Super 500 event marks Chen’s first tournament win of the year.

Ranked No. 4 in the world, Chen Yufei had previously reached the semifinals of the Malaysia and India Open tournaments this year, but had yet to advance to a final. She secured her spot in the championship match with a victory over Japanese star Akane Yamaguchi in the semifinals. Sunday’s final was a rematch of their only previous encounter, which Chen also won.

Opatniputh, currently ranked No. 36, burst onto the scene last year, winning gold at the World Junior Championships in 2023 and finishing as the runner-up at the Taipei Open. Widely considered the heir apparent to Ratchanok Intanon, the young Thai player enjoyed a strong run in Indonesia, battling her way to the semifinals. She then dispatched Malaysia’s Letshanaa Karupathevan in straight sets on Saturday, earning her first appearance in a 500-level final.

The opening game saw a tight back-and-forth battle, with Chen Yufei building a lead of 14-9. She initially reached match point, but Opatniputh quickly responded, saving three game points to level the score. Despite the late surge from her opponent, Chen ultimately prevailed 23-21. The second game began with Chen again establishing an early advantage, leading 9-5 and securing the first 11 points. After the score was tied at 11, Chen reeled off five consecutive points to extend her lead and closed out the match with a 21-13 victory.
