Child Cancer Symptoms: Signs Parents Should Check For

Parents should be aware of potential cancer symptoms in children, particularly leukemia, or blood cancer, which is the most common type diagnosed in pediatric cases. This advice comes from Dr. Ludi Dhyani Rahmartani, a pediatric hematology-oncology specialist.

Symptoms of leukemia in children can include unexplained bruising, bleeding, paleness, persistent fever, and joint pain, according to Dr. Rahmartani. If a child exhibits these signs, a medical evaluation is recommended.

“The most frequent childhood cancer is leukemia, so symptoms often include bruising, bleeding, paleness, prolonged fever, and joint pain. These should be checked out with a blood test and consultation with a doctor,” Dr. Ludi said during the #BeraniGundul 2026 event in Central Jakarta on Sunday, February 15, 2026.

Other common solid tumors in children include retinoblastoma, a type of eye cancer, and brain tumors. A key sign of retinoblastoma can be a “cat’s eye” appearance in the pupil.

Brain tumors, however, typically require an MRI for diagnosis.

“Retinoblastoma can be detected early, so if a child’s eyes appear crossed, or have a white spot resembling a cat’s eye, it’s important to see an eye doctor to rule out retinoblastoma,” Dr. Ludi explained.

While childhood cancer cannot be prevented, Dr. Rahmartani emphasized that it is often curable with prompt diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Early detection is critical for successful outcomes.

Unfortunately, diagnosis is often delayed, and in some instances, parents turn to alternative medicine before seeking conventional medical care. Dr. Rahmartani strongly advises against this approach, as it can hinder treatment and worsen the prognosis.

“It’s important for the public to understand not to fear doctors or treatment, or medications for cancer. Often, when people try alternative medicine first and then arrive to a doctor, it’s already too late. The sooner therapy begins, the better the chance of recovery,” she stated.
