The Fondatioun Kriibskrank Kanner is highlighting the urgent require for increased awareness, research support, and comprehensive care for children battling cancer and their families in recognition of International Childhood Cancer Day.

February 15th marks International Childhood Cancer Day, a crucial date for raising public awareness about the realities of childhood cancer. The day serves as a reminder that behind the statistics and medical protocols are children and families facing a profoundly challenging experience.

In Luxembourg and the Greater Region, children and adolescents are diagnosed with cancer each year, significantly impacting their daily lives and the lives of their loved ones. This underscores the importance of localized support and resources for families navigating a cancer diagnosis.

Across Europe, the statistics are alarming: 100 children receive a cancer diagnosis each day. Fewer than 10% of these young patients have access to innovative treatments, and nearly 6,000 children die from the disease annually.

“Pediatric cancer is rare, but the hardship it imposes is immense. Behind each diagnosis is a disrupted childhood and a family in need of support, both now and in the long term,” emphasizes Pierre Dochen, director of the Fondatioun Kriibskrank Kanner.

Nearly 150 Families Affected

For over 35 years, the Foundation has been supporting children with cancer and their families through public and partner solidarity.

In 2025, the organization supported 149 children and their families, including 42 new patients between the ages of 0 and 18, providing emotional, psychological, social, educational, and financial assistance.

On this symbolic day, the Fondatioun Kriibskrank Kanner is calling for strengthened information, awareness, and support surrounding pediatric cancer, so that no child or family faces the disease alone.

Upcoming Events

Several important events are planned in this effort. On April 15th, the “Lëtz Go Research” conference will be held at the Arendt House in Luxembourg City. The conference will bring together experts in pediatric oncology and provide the public with a better understanding of research advancements, challenges, and future prospects.

Another highlight is the 9th edition of the solidarity run “Lëtz Go Gold,” scheduled for Saturday, September 26th in Neudorf. This event offers an opportunity for everyone to actively support research efforts.

Funds raised will support the European initiative Fight Kids Cancer, which aims to cure all children and adolescents with cancer through more targeted and less toxic therapies.

In observance of International Childhood Cancer Day, the Foundation invites the public to join its commitment to providing young patients with the best possible future. “Every donation, no matter the amount, counts,” they state.
