Chile has elected José Antonio Kast as its next president, marking a decisive turn to the right for the South American nation.Following a runoff election on Sunday,Kast defeated leftist candidate Janet Jara, capitalizing on voter anxieties surrounding crime and immigration. The results signal a rejection of the political establishment and a desire for more conservative policies after a period of progressive governance, perhaps reshaping Chile’s domestic and foreign agendas. This election was closely watched internationally as a bellwether for political trends in a region facing similar challenges.

After the count of more than 10 million votes – approximately 70 percent of the total ballots cast – Kast has taken a clear lead over Janet Jara, a Communist Party member who headed a broad left-wing coalition.

Jara, 51, conceded defeat to her opponent, stating in a social media post that voters “spoke loud and clear” and extending her congratulations and best wishes to the president-elect.

The election results in Chile mark a significant shift in the country’s political landscape, potentially impacting regional alliances and economic policies. Kast, a conservative Catholic, focused his campaign on combating crime in Chile and pledged to deport nearly 340,000 undocumented migrants, the majority of whom are Venezuelan.

Kast has openly expressed support for a “military dictatorship,” stating he would have voted for the late Augusto Pinochet had the former leader still been alive. This stance has drawn criticism from human rights groups and political opponents.

In the first round of voting on November 16, both candidates received around 25 percent of the vote, with a slight advantage for the left. However, all right-wing candidates combined secured 70 percent of the vote, setting the stage for a decisive second round.

The outcome reflects growing concerns among Chilean voters regarding security and immigration, issues that Kast successfully capitalized on during his campaign.
