China’s U20 women’s national team fell short in the Asian Cup semifinals, losing 0-2 to Japan on April 15, 2026, in Thailand. The defeat ended their hopes of reaching the final but secured qualification for the upcoming U20 Women’s World Cup in Poland this September.
Japan took control early, with Mao Itamura scoring in the fifth minute to open the scoring. Nozomi Fukushima doubled the lead from a free kick in the 24th minute, giving Japan a commanding halftime advantage.
Despite a more aggressive second-half performance that created several scoring chances, China could not find a way past Japan’s defense. Coach Colin Bell acknowledged his team struggled to transition from defense to attack after being pinned back early, though he praised their resilience and effort after halftime.
“We anticipated Japan would push for an early goal and prepared accordingly, but we were forced deep and didn’t handle the shift from defense to attack well,” Bell said. “We had opportunities in the second half to change the game and created some good chances, but we didn’t take them. Still, I’m proud of the team’s courage and fight.”
China had entered the match undefeated, having won all three group stage games and defeated Uzbekistan 2-1 in the quarterfinals to reach the semifinals. The loss marks their third consecutive defeat to Japan in Asian Cup competition.
Although the team will not play a third-place match, they will return to China on the evening of April 16, 2026. Bell and his coaching staff are set to travel back to Europe for a break, with his future role with the team pending official confirmation from the Chinese Football Association.
In post-match remarks, Bell emphasized the need for long-term planning in Chinese women’s football, stating he hopes the sport will make clear decisions about its future direction and invest in coaching and match operations.
The result means China will now shift focus to preparations for the U20 Women’s World Cup, where they aim to build on their Asian Cup performance. Several players, including Wang Aifang and Xie Zongmei, are expected to join the senior national team for upcoming Asian Games and World Cup qualifiers.
