Mozambique is battling a growing cholera outbreak, with a sharp increase in cases reported throughout late 2025 and into the new year. Data released this week from the Ministry of Health indicate a concerning rise in both infections – nearly 1,200 new cases last month – and the associated fatality rate, raising fears for public health in vulnerable communities. This outbreak follows a previous, meaningful epidemic that impacted the country just months prior, underscoring the persistent challenges of waterborne disease control in the region.

Mozambique is experiencing a surge in cholera cases, with nearly 1,200 new infections and 23 deaths reported last month, according to data from the country’s Ministry of Health. The rising numbers indicate a concerning increase in the fatality rate associated with the ongoing outbreak, highlighting the vulnerability of communities to waterborne diseases.

A recent report from the National Directorate of Public Health, covering the period from September 3 to January 4, documented a total of 1,721 cholera cases. This represents a significant increase from a previous report on November 29, which recorded 559 cases and three deaths. The majority of the new cases were concentrated in two provinces: Nampula, with 639 cases and 11 deaths, and Tete, with 793 cases and 13 deaths.

To date, the outbreak has resulted in 26 deaths over the past four months, including two in Cabo Delgado province. In the 24 hours leading up to the latest bulletin, health officials reported 12 new cases and one additional death, bringing the overall fatality rate to 1.5%.

Mozambique previously faced a cholera epidemic between October 17, 2024, and July 20, 2025, which resulted in 4,420 infections, primarily in Nampula, and 64 deaths. The Minister of Health stated that at least 169 people died from cholera in 2025, from approximately 40,000 total cases. Officials are urging the public to adhere to strict hygiene practices to curb the spread of the disease.
