Holiday tipping for postal workers is a common practice for many as the year comes to a close. However, strict rules govern what personnel are permitted to accept.

Kassel – As Christmas approaches, most package delivery personnel and postal employees are working at full capacity. Many Germans want to show their appreciation with a tip. However, caution is advised: what is perfectly normal in a restaurant doesn’t necessarily apply to package deliverers at DHL, Hermes, or DPD. Many companies have strict rules regarding how much gratuity is allowed.

Deutsche Post DHL Group has clear guidelines. “It’s a nice tradition that deliverers receive tips or small gifts, especially before the holidays,” the company explained in response to a query from hna.de. “Gifts up to a value of 25 euros are permitted.” This applies to cash as well, although tips “regularly fall well below this amount,” according to a spokesperson. The logistics sector is currently facing increased scrutiny regarding employee compensation and benefits.

Tipping Rules Vary – What Each Delivery Service Allows

The rules are more complex for package delivery company Hermes. The company works nationwide with independent logistics firms that establish their own policies. “Unfortunately, we cannot provide a general statement regarding a maximum limit for gifts of money or goods,” Hermes stated in response to a request for comment. The company advises, “In case of doubt, we recommend that customers briefly consult their deliverer regarding the applicable regulations.”

Tip or No Tip? Strict Rules at DPD

DPD takes a more modern, but stricter, approach. “DPD deliverers are permitted to accept a tip,” confirmed Sebastian Zeh of DPD Germany to t-online.de. Customers can offer tips not only in cash at the door, but also digitally via the app or portal through PayPal. However, only amounts up to 9.50 euros are allowed – less than half the amount DHL colleagues can accept. This disparity highlights the varying approaches to employee compensation within the industry.

Even more restrictive rules apply to other professions, particularly in public services such as waste management. In many municipalities, cash is prohibited due to anti-corruption regulations. This is the case in the Bavarian state capital of Munich, as detailed on the Munich Waste Management website. Those who have granted delivery authorization to Hermes, DPD or DHL could quickly regret it in the event of a problem.

It’s important to note that gifts should never be contingent on a service. Attempted bribery could be alleged if someone expects additional service in return. However, this is unlikely with most tip amounts. According to a 2023 study, the average of all tips in Germany is 2.50 euros – about half of all customers give their deliverers something.
