Buck Rogers Reboot in Development with ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Writer

Legendary Pictures is moving forward with a reboot of the classic science fiction property Buck Rogers, tapping Zeb Wells, co-writer of the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine, to pen the script.

The studio, which secured the rights to the Buck Rogers franchise five years ago, plans to expand the character’s universe beyond a single film with a live-action television series and an anime adaptation also in development. While George Clooney was previously attached to star in a Buck Rogers series in 2021, his involvement in the current project remains unconfirmed. The character first appeared in the 1929 novella Armageddon – 2419 A.D., created by Philip Francis Nowlan, and quickly became a staple of pulp science fiction, influencing later heroes like Flash Gordon.

Buck Rogers has a long history of adaptations, beginning with a 1933 film at the World’s Fair and continuing with serials starring Buster Crabbe in 1939, and a television series in the 1950s. The most recognizable adaptation is arguably Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, starring Gil Gerard, which ran for two seasons in 1979-1980 and helped solidify the character’s place in pop culture. This enduring legacy demonstrates the continued appeal of space adventure and heroic narratives.

Legendary Pictures has not yet announced a release date for the Buck Rogers reboot, but the project signals a renewed interest in reviving classic science fiction properties for modern audiences. Studio representatives stated they are currently focused on finalizing the script and assembling a production team.
