A young French emergency room doctor and a firefighter died February 11, 2026, during a helicopter training exercise in Clermont-Ferrand, France, prompting an outpouring of grief and tributes. The incident highlights the inherent risks faced by emergency responders and medical personnel during critical training operations.
Dr. Sophie Fleurquin, 30, was described by the French Society of Emergency Medicine (SFMU) as a dedicated physician who was on the cusp of a promising career. “Sophie was going to celebrate her 31st birthday in a few days, she was going to capture the exam for hospital practitioner in a few days, her future was set within the Emergency Department of the CHU of Clermont-Ferrand,” the SFMU wrote in a statement.
“Sophie was a committed doctor, she had convictions and character that she put to the benefit of patients and the daily lives of the medical teams.”
Dr. Fleurquin arrived in Clermont-Ferrand in November 2019 after studying at the University of Liège, completing her residency in Auvergne. Her work during the COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated her passion for emergency medicine and her ability to respond to exceptional health situations.
Beyond her hospital duties, Dr. Fleurquin volunteered her medical expertise at numerous sporting events, including Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 football matches, the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the Rugby World Cup, and as a medical officer for the Tour de France in 2023. She also served as a volunteer firefighter with the SDIS 63 since July 2023, holding the rank of Lieutenant.
The SFMU concluded its tribute with thoughts for her loved ones: “Our thoughts go to her parents, proud of her commitment to this difficult profession, to Alexandre her husband, to her two sisters.”
Doctor Volunteered Time Outside of Hospital
Dr. Fleurquin was deeply involved in the emergency department and generously dedicated her time to various sporting events. According to La Montagne, Clermont Foot, a local football club, paid tribute to her on Thursday, and a minute of silence will be observed before their match against Rodez on Friday.
“The Auvergne club, where the young emergency physician regularly intervened as a field resuscitation doctor at the Gabriel-Montpied stadium, praised her commitment and humanity,” the regional newspaper reported.
Dr. Fleurquin’s involvement extended to the medical coverage of numerous national and international sporting events, including the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
Our publication extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased, whose ties to the region are strong.
