Liverpool drew 2-2 against Fulham on Sunday, January 4, 2026, at Craven Cottage. In a tactical shift, Gakpo featured in a different capacity than his usual position.

Liverpool is currently dealing with injury concerns in the striking department, with Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak both sidelined. As a result, manager Arne Slot opted to deploy Gakpo as the team’s number 9.

The move proved effective, as Gakpo found the back of the net for Liverpool against Fulham. Florian Wirtz also scored for the Reds in the draw.

“As a forward player, you always want to score goals to help the team, so that’s a positive for me,” Gakpo told BBC.

“Ultimately, it’s a team sport and we didn’t win. So, I’m still disappointed,” he added.

This season, Gakpo has made 24 appearances across all competitions for Liverpool, contributing six goals and four assists.
