A cold air mass is expected to bring temperatures down to 10 degrees Celsius (50 degrees Fahrenheit) tonight and early tomorrow morning, according to a forecaster with Taiwan’s Central Weather Bureau. Rain is forecast across the island tomorrow, with a higher chance of heavy rainfall on windward slopes. The cold air will weaken on Saturday, but another northeastern monsoon is expected to arrive next Tuesday, bringing cool, damp conditions to northern and eastern Taiwan. Officials are advising those planning to watch New Year’s Eve fireworks in Taipei to avoid the west side of Taipei 101.

Forecaster Lai Hsin-kuo said the cold air mass will continue to influence the weather tomorrow, bringing rain to all of Taiwan. The northern, eastern, and southern regions, as well as mountainous areas in central Taiwan, are expected to see a high probability of precipitation. Locally heavy rainfall is possible along the northern coast, in Yilan County, and in the mountainous areas around Taipei. Rain is also expected in the plains of central and southern Taiwan.

The cold air mass will gradually weaken on Saturday, with scattered, brief showers expected in areas from Taoyuan north, along the east coast, and in the Hengchun Peninsula. Other areas will be mostly cloudy to sunny, though some rain is still possible in areas south of Hsinchu.

Sunday and Monday will see less moisture in the air, with scattered, brief showers possible along the northern coast, in the east, and in the mountainous areas around Taipei. The Hengchun Peninsula may also see isolated showers, while other areas will be mostly cloudy.

The northeastern monsoon will strengthen slightly next Tuesday, bringing scattered, brief showers to areas from Taoyuan north, along the east coast, and in Hengchun. This weather pattern is expected to continue into New Year’s Day.

Temperatures will drop to between 12 and 14 degrees Celsius (54 and 57 degrees Fahrenheit) in central and northern Taiwan, Yilan County, and in the south and east. Some areas between Taoyuan and Miaoli, as well as Kinmen, could see temperatures dip below 10 degrees Celsius (50 degrees Fahrenheit).

Highs tomorrow in the north and Yilan County will only reach 16 to 18 degrees Celsius (61 to 64 degrees Fahrenheit), while central and southern Taiwan will see temperatures between 21 and 23 degrees Celsius (70 to 73 degrees Fahrenheit). The cooler temperatures will be felt throughout the day. As the cold air mass weakens on Saturday, temperatures will rise, but a significant difference between daytime highs and nighttime lows is expected in areas south of Miaoli. Northern Taiwan will see highs climb above 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit), with central Taiwan reaching 25 degrees Celsius (77 degrees Fahrenheit) and southern Taiwan reaching 26 degrees Celsius (79 degrees Fahrenheit).

Northern and northeastern Taiwan will continue to warm up on Sunday and Monday, with significant temperature differences between day and night in areas south of Hsinchu. The strengthening of the northeastern monsoon next Tuesday will bring slightly cooler temperatures across the island.

Regarding New Year’s Eve weather, Lai Hsin-kuo said that the northeastern monsoon will bring easterly winds to Taipei. Those hoping to view the fireworks display are advised to avoid the west side of Taipei 101. The chance of seeing the first sunrise of the new year will also be lower in eastern Taiwan due to increased cloud cover.

Additionally, Lai Hsin-kuo noted that there is a chance of snow or ice at elevations above 3,000 meters (9,843 feet) in central and eastern Taiwan, as well as in northern and northeastern Taiwan at elevations above 2,000 meters (6,562 feet) on Friday. A slight chance of lingering snow remains at elevations above 3,000 meters in northern and eastern Taiwan on Saturday.
