Crans-Montana Bar Owners Questioned in New Year’s Fire Investigation
Crans-Montana, Switzerland – Jacques and Jessica Moretti, the co-owners of the “Le Constellation” bar in the Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana, have been repeatedly questioned by authorities investigating a devastating New Year’s Day fire that killed dozens and injured over a hundred. The tragedy has prompted a wide-ranging investigation and intense scrutiny of safety protocols at the popular resort.
Jacques Moretti was most recently questioned on Wednesday, February 11, by lawyers representing victims of the fire, according to reports. This followed earlier questioning by prosecutors on January 9, and 20. During Wednesday’s hearing, Moretti and his wife arrived together and did not comment to the assembled press.
The public prosecutor’s office has issued approximately 50 orders and requests for international cooperation as part of the ongoing investigation. To date, 263 civil parties have been identified, represented by 74 lawyers. Authorities are also planning to allow lawyers to review surveillance footage from Crans-Montana and the bar, though the footage itself will not be released to the public due to its sensitive nature.
According to reports, an email surfaced revealing that Jacques Moretti had previously declined to purchase fire-retardant foam, deeming it too expensive. The details of this communication have added another layer to the investigation.
The questioning of the Morettis comes as family members of the victims express frustration with the pace of the investigation. One brother of a victim, who attended Jessica Moretti’s recent hearing, reportedly questioned her emotional display, stating, “She is crying, but we spot that it is false.”
The local bar association has condemned attacks directed at the lawyers representing the Morettis.
Authorities have appealed for calm following the expressions of anger from those affected by the tragedy. The incident has raised concerns about safety regulations in Swiss ski resorts and prompted calls for a thorough review of fire prevention measures.
