Cyberpunk 2077 Levels Up with Comprehensive PlayStation 5 Pro Update

CD PROJEKT RED has officially launched a free update for Cyberpunk 2077, specifically engineered to leverage the advanced hardware of the PlayStation 5 Pro. Released on April 8, 2026, the update introduces significant visual and performance enhancements designed to bring the neon-drenched streets of Night City closer to the developer’s original artistic vision.

A central feature of this upgrade is the integration of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). This AI-powered upscaling technology renders the game at a lower resolution and then uses artificial intelligence to upscale the image pixel by pixel. According to Jakub Knapik, VP and Global Art Director at CD PROJEKT RED, this allows the game to maintain high performance even as bringing every detail—from supercharged cars to thermal katanas—to life in 4K visuals.

The update also marks a significant leap in lighting technology. By implementing BVH8 (8-way Bounding Volume Hierarchy) support, the developers have enhanced the efficiency and performance of ray-traced reflections, shadows, and lighting. To further optimize the experience, the team implemented a Variable Rate Shading (VRS) algorithm and improved ray-tracing caches to minimize shadow popping.

To grant players flexibility in how they experience the game, the update introduces three distinct graphics modes:

  • Ray Tracing Mode: The recommended default setting, which delivers a stable 60 FPS with ray-traced shadows and reflections on transparent objects and vehicle paint.
  • Performance Mode: Focused on fluidity, targeting 60 FPS on standard displays and reaching up to 90 FPS on displays equipped with Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) technology.
  • Ray Tracing Pro Mode: The most visually ambitious setting, adding ray-traced ambient occlusion, emissive lighting, and skylight. This mode targets 40 FPS on high refresh rate (HFR) displays, or 30 FPS on standard displays.

This technical overhaul underscores the ongoing trend of using AI-driven upscaling to bridge the gap between cinematic visual fidelity and high-frame-rate performance in open-world environments.

The enhanced version of the action role-playing game is available now for PS5 Pro owners, including those accessing the title via the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog.
