Włodzimierz Czarzasty, the newly elected Speaker of the Sejm, delivered an address to the nation Friday evening, outlining his commitment to upholding Poland’s constitution and democratic principles. The speech came after Czarzasty’s election on Tuesday, marking a shift in leadership within the Polish parliament.
“I will be a guardian of the rights of parliament and the democratic system of government as described in our Constitution,” Czarzasty stated in his address. He emphasized the Constitution’s role in guaranteeing social justice, institutional order, political pluralism, and equal rights under the law.
Speaker of the Sejm Vows to Uphold Constitutional Principles
Czarzasty asserted that the political challenges facing Poland stem not from its constitutional framework, but from attempts to disregard its principles. “The principles are simple: The President represents, the government governs,” he explained.
“I will put a stop to any attempts to introduce a model other than the one we agreed upon in the 1997 constitutional referendum,” Czarzasty said. “Agreements must be honored. Polish history shows that our nation does not accept a system of government in which all power is concentrated in the hands of one person.”
The Speaker emphasized that he was elected by the members of the October 15th coalition and identified as a politician of the Left party. “I will act on behalf of this coalition, on behalf of the 11 million voters who entrusted this coalition with power,” he stated. “Good cooperation with the government will be one of my main goals.”
Czarzasty also announced his intention to use his authority to veto legislation he deems harmful or populist, particularly measures that could undermine the stability of the state. “I will always pay attention to whether draft laws have real funding sources, or whether they only serve political games and divide citizens,” he said.
Czarzasty Takes Office, Pledges a Tolerant Parliament
The new Speaker of the Sejm said that citizens can expect “seriousness, responsibility, calm, and predictability” from his leadership. He pledged to collaborate with all members of parliament, maintaining an open dialogue within his office and on the floor of the Sejm to foster stability and avoid political disruption.
“I will support a tolerant parliament, open to different communities, exchange of views, and discussion on difficult topics,” Czarzasty continued. “I will defend Poland’s presence in the European Union and NATO, which are a guarantee of our security.”
