Italy’s Darderi Defeats Hanfmann to Claim Santiago Title
Luciano Darderi completed an incredible Sunday for Italian tennis, securing victory at the ATP 250 tournament in Santiago, Chile. Following Flavio Cobolli’s triumph in Acapulco, Mexico, and the success of 18-year-ancient Federico Cinà at the Pune Challenger, Darderi added another title for Italy. He battled past Germany’s Yannick Hanfmann in two hard-fought sets, 7-6 (8) 7-5, in a match lasting one hour and 48 minutes, claiming the fifth tournament win of his career and rebounding from a recent final loss to Cerundolo in Buenos Aires.
A CHAMPIONSHIP VICTORY
—
The victory keeps Darderi ranked at No. 21 in the world, but a move into the top 20 now appears imminent. Darderi faced a challenging opponent in Hanfmann, who thrives in the high-altitude conditions of Santiago, making him a difficult competitor. The Italian started strongly, earning a break in the third game, but Hanfmann responded in the eighth, forcing a tiebreak. The tiebreak was a tense affair with extended rallies, where Darderi saved a set point at 6-5 before ultimately closing it out 7-6.
Hanfmann came out firing in the second set, securing a break in the third game. But, Darderi immediately answered, leveling the score. Both players then held serve, maintaining the pressure with strong serving performances and preventing any further break opportunities until 6-5, with Hanfmann serving. Unable to withstand the pressure, the German faltered, committing crucial errors that allowed Darderi to capitalize and claim the match at the first opportunity, becoming the champion of Santiago. Prior to this win, Luciano had previously secured tournament victories in Cordoba in 2024, and in Marrakesh, Bastad and Umago last year, making him Italy’s most successful player of the season behind Jannik Sinner.
