De Lijn: Unions Plan 9-Day Strike in March & April

Belgian public transport operator De Lijn is facing potential disruption as labor unions have announced plans for nine days of strikes in March and April, according to reports on February 23, 2026.

The strikes are in response to additional cost-cutting measures announced by the Flemish government in late January. Unions claim the cuts, totaling 5.5 million euros on top of previously announced 30 million euro savings for 2026, will disproportionately impact service in rural areas. This announcement follows a prior indication of “a spring of action” from the unions.

The first week of planned strikes, running from March 16 to March 20, will target the provinces of West Flanders, Antwerp, Flemish Brabant, Limburg, and East Flanders. A second week of action is scheduled for April 7, focusing on Flemish Brabant, Limburg, and Antwerp, with strikes as well planned for both East and West Flanders on April 10. Notably, the unions have stated they will not strike during the week of March 23 to avoid disrupting secondary school Easter exams.

De Lijn currently reports that its services are operating normally and are not currently affected by any labor action. The company advises passengers to consult its route planner for the latest information before traveling. The situation highlights the ongoing challenges facing public transportation systems as governments grapple with budgetary constraints and labor relations.

Passengers can find updates on service disruptions and alternative schedules on De Lijn’s website.
