A playful, yet pointed, online campaign is gaining momentum in Denmark as a response too former U.S. President Donald Trump‘s renewed interest in acquiring Greenland. dubbed “Danification,” the satirical movement proposes a trade: Denmark will purchase California, a move proponents argue would benefit both nations and highlight the absurdity of treating land as a negotiable asset. The initiative, which began in 2025 and has already garnered over 280,000 signatures on an online petition, reflects growing international unease with the concept of territorial sales and has sparked similar commentary from public figures like British journalist Piers Morgan.

A wave of online satire is sweeping across Denmark in response to renewed discussion of a potential sale of Greenland to the United States. The playful backlash comes after former President Donald Trump repeatedly expressed interest in acquiring the autonomous territory, and highlights a growing international unease with the idea of nations treating land as a commodity.

  • Negocjacje mają prowadzić m.in. dyrektorzy Lego i aktorzy serialu Borgen.
  • Angielski dziennikarz Piers Morgan dołączył do satyry, proponując, by Wielka Brytania odkupiła Amerykę, co również stało się viralowym komentarzem na temat napięć politycznych.

The satirical campaign, dubbed “Danification,” began gaining traction earlier in 2025 when Trump initially raised the prospect of purchasing Greenland after taking office. It has now resurfaced amid heightened international debate surrounding the territory, with over 280,000 signatures collected on the online petition.

The initiative playfully argues that acquiring California would be a beneficial move for Denmark, citing the state’s favorable climate – boasting 300 sunny days annually – and its technological prowess. “Imagine trading wellies for flip-flops!” the creators of “Danification” wrote, referencing the contrast between Denmark’s often inclement weather and California’s sunshine.

Beyond the weather, proponents suggest that access to California would give Denmark a foothold in the U.S. tech industry and ensure a steady supply of avocados. They also frame the potential purchase as a win for the Western world, emphasizing Denmark’s reputation for freedom and good governance.

The project’s authors point to Trump’s well-documented animosity towards California Governor Gavin Newsom. “Let’s be honest – Trump isn’t California’s biggest fan. He’s called it the most ruined state and has been at odds with its leaders for years. We’re pretty sure he’d be willing to get rid of it for the right price,” they wrote, even offering to sweeten the deal with Danish pastries.

“And what about the will of the people? Well, let’s be honest – has that ever stopped him? If Trump wants to sell California, he will sell it,” they added.

As part of the mock diplomatic process, the “Danification” team plans to dispatch its most skilled negotiators: executives from Lego and the cast of “Borgen,” the critically acclaimed Danish political drama.

“In the national interest of promoting the extraordinary heritage of our Nation, California will become New Denmark. Los Angeles? Rather Løs Ångeles,” the authors predict.

In return, Denmark promises universal healthcare, evidence-based policymaking, extensive bike lanes, and a lifetime supply of Danish baked goods.

The satirical movement has even extended beyond Denmark’s borders.

British journalist Piers Morgan, known for his often-friendly relationship with Donald Trump, joined the fray with a tongue-in-cheek post on X (formerly Twitter). In response to Trump’s continued pressure on Denmark regarding Greenland, Morgan proposed: “Great Britain should buy America. It was ours once, and it would bolster our Atlantic security. If you don’t sell it to us, we’ll impose tariffs on the United States and any country that supports your opposition to this very favorable offer. Fair enough?”
