Players of Diablo IV are anticipating the arrival of the Lord of Hatred expansion next month. To bridge the wait, Season 12 will launch next week, dubbed the Season of Slaughter. The new season introduces a first-of-its-kind feature for the game.

Players will have the opportunity to transform into The Butcher, one of the most iconic demonic creatures in the Diablo universe, responsible for the demise of countless adventurers across the franchise. Now, players will experience the power of becoming this terrifying monster themselves.

The transformation goes beyond a simple visual change, granting access to The Butcher’s devastating abilities, including cleaving attacks and a signature hook. Whereas the transformation won’t be permanent, multiple avenues will allow players to access this iconic form.

One method involves completing the season’s dedicated quests, offering a chance to experience the transformation. A new event requires players to gather Carnivorous Offerings, which can be spent at a new type of sanctuary to activate The Butcher’s powers. This activation will unleash a surge of enemies, providing ample opportunities for brutal combat. The addition of such a dynamic transformation mechanic underscores the ongoing evolution of action RPG gameplay.

A new event will also be introduced in player-versus-player (PvP) zones, focused on increasing a savagery meter. The player with the highest meter at the ceremony’s conclusion will face off against The Butcher’s Idol, transforming into the beast upon victory and becoming a formidable threat to other players.

Further enhancing the new content, a feature from Diablo III, the kill streak, will be implemented. Rapidly defeating enemies will continuously increase the kill streak, granting increased experience and reputation based on performance. The Season of Slaughter is set to begin on March 11, promising one of the most visceral and chaotic updates yet for Diablo IV.
