The findings come from a study conducted by Which?, a UK-based consumer advocacy organization, which analyzed the most secure and effective methods for arranging forks, knives, and spoons within the appliance. The debate, as it turns out, is a common source of contention in households.

“One of the most frequently asked questions is – should cutlery be placed facing up or facing down?” explained the experts at Which?.

Those who advocate for placing cutlery tines-up argue it’s the only way to ensure thorough cleaning and drying. This positioning exposes soiled areas to water jets and makes it easier to identify any nesting, which can impede water and detergent circulation.

Conversely, proponents of placing cutlery tines-down maintain it’s the safer option, particularly when dealing with knives and sharp utensils. “The sharpest cutlery, such as knives, should be placed with the blade facing down to prevent accidental cuts,” Which? noted. This method also simplifies unloading and minimizes fingerprints, contributing to better hygiene.

While both approaches have merit, manufacturers of dishwashers – including major brands like LG, Bosch, and Beko – generally recommend placing cutlery tines-down. This consensus suggests a focus on safety and ease of use for consumers.

However, Which? emphasizes that there isn’t a single “wrong” way to load cutlery. “The sharpest cutlery should always be placed with the blade facing down. For the rest, the best practice is to alternate the orientation – some facing up and others facing down – to prevent nesting and ensure a superior clean. Although the unloading process may take a little longer, it’s worth it.”

The organization further advises against placing very sharp knives in the dishwasher altogether. The high temperatures and powerful water jets can dull or damage the blade over time, potentially impacting their performance and value.
