Jakarta-based AdHoc Studios is addressing concerns after the nintendo Switch release of its detective adventure game, Dispatch, underwent unexpected censorship. The alterations, consisting of black boxes implemented by Nintendo, underscore the often-complex relationship between game developers and platform holders regarding content restrictions. This instance highlights a growing issue for independent studios navigating varying content policies across different consoles and digital storefronts, perhaps impacting creative vision and player experience.

Jakarta, February 4 — AdHoc Studios has confirmed that the Nintendo Switch version of its game, Dispatch, has been subject to censorship due to non-compliance with Nintendo’s platform guidelines.

The issue stems from comments made by AdHoc Studio co-founder Nick Herman, who initially believed the game would avoid censorship, citing the successful releases of titles like The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 on the Nintendo Switch. This expectation proved inaccurate, with Nintendo implementing black boxes in certain scenes to ensure the game met its content standards.

Nintendo reserves the right to modify games to align with its policies before allowing their release on its platform. AdHoc Studios attempted to proactively inform potential buyers about the censorship through a “Disclaimer” tab on the Nintendo eShop page. However, Herman stated the placement of this tab was ineffective, creating the impression that the studio was attempting to mislead customers.

AdHoc Studios is currently exploring potential adjustments to remove the need for censorship, focusing on elements such as language or potentially suggestive gestures. The studio’s response highlights the challenges independent developers face navigating platform-specific content restrictions.

Herman concluded by apologizing to fans for the censorship, acknowledging their right to be upset by the changes. “We are sorry for the censorship,” Herman said. “You are right to be angry.”
