Divinity: Don’t Bother With Old Games, Says Larian Boss

Ahead of the release of its newest title, Larian Studios is signaling to fans that prior knowledge of the Divinity franchise isn’t essential for enjoyment. The Belgian developer, known for the critically acclaimed Divinity: Original Sin and Divinity: Original Sin 2, is balancing accessibility for new players with acknowledging the rich history of the role-playing game series. studio head Swen Vincke explained the upcoming game will contain references to past titles, but won’t require a deep dive into the two-decade-old lore for a fulfilling experience.

Larian Studios, the developer behind the highly anticipated new Divinity game, is advising players not to feel obligated to delve into the franchise’s extensive back catalog before embarking on the latest adventure. While the studio acknowledges the historical significance of earlier titles, they suggest that the Divinity: Original Sin series provides sufficient context for newcomers.

According to Larian’s studio head, Swen Vincke, the new installment references and builds upon elements established in Divinity: Original Sin and Divinity: Original Sin 2, both in terms of lore and gameplay mechanics. “If you’ve played Divinity: Original Sin, you’ll see references to those games in this Divinity,” Vincke explained. “If you’ve played the first Divinity, you’ll see it correctly referenced in this one. Things like Ego Draconis, or Dragon Commander – they are mentioned, but they are part of the history of the world and help shape how it is today.”

However, Vincke also noted that older Divinity games, while historically important, are beginning to show their age. “If you really want to know everything, there are games that came before Original Sin. But they are a bit outdated now, and quite old,” he said.

This approach allows players to jump into the latest Divinity experience without needing to spend potentially dozens of hours catching up on two decades of game history. Larian is offering players a choice: explore the full backstory through the Original Sin games, or simply dive into a new, epic adventure in Rivellon. The studio’s decision reflects a growing trend in game development, where studios aim to make their titles accessible to a wider audience without sacrificing depth for long-time fans.
