Diyarbakır: Mountain ‘Explodes’ & New Waterfall Emerges After Rain

Recent heavy rainfall in Diyarbakır, Turkey, has led to an unusual phenomenon: the emergence of a spring from a fissure in a mountainside. The unexpected water source was captured in a video shared by a local nature enthusiast, showing water cascading down the slope like a waterfall.

The rainfall, which began at the end of December 2025, has been a welcome relief for the region, alleviating concerns about drought. The saturated ground is now believed to be contributing to increased subsurface water movement, resulting in the surface rupture and water flow. This event underscores the powerful impact of precipitation on geological formations.

Experts suggest that the intense saturation of the soil is responsible for the increased activity of underground water, leading to the fissure and subsequent water release. Authorities are urging caution in the area, warning of potential landslide and mudslide risks.

The recent rains have been particularly significant as they follow a period of prolonged drought, offering hope for a productive agricultural season. According to reports from February 9, 2026, farmers in the Kulp district are optimistic about their yields as fields become saturated with water. “We sowed our crops in the fall. We were worried this season, as we’ve experienced drought in previous years,” said Mehmet Taş, a farmer in Hamzalı Mahallesi. “But with the abundance of snow and rain this year, the soil has recovered. Our crops look good now. Hopefully, we’ll have a bountiful harvest at the end of the season.”

Professor Dr. Ali Satar, from the Zoology Department at Dicle University, noted on February 5, 2026, that the heavy snowfall – the most significant in 20 years – is vital for the region’s ecosystem. “When there is snow, it provides insulation. We will see a tremendous increase in the vitality of nature and the richness of the soil,” he stated. “Hopefully, this year we will see more fertile soils, a richer vegetation and a richer vitality.”
